How do I write a job advert that gets the most responses from PAs?

Your job posting is your advert to the world. You want it to be accurate and informative so that you attract the highest calibre of personal care assistant(s) to your role.

Create a job title that will attract the attention of potential candidates

Having a strong title is essential as a good one will encourage more candidates to click through to read the rest of your requirements. Your title should be descriptive and compelling. So, for instance, “Female personal care assistant for lady with dementia w/e mornings Birmingham B70 £12K FTE pro-rata” is a good title, versus “Male/female PA required for an elderly lady with care needs” which is non-informative.

As a rule, always include:

  • Location (this could be the town or area code - which is the first part of your postcode)

  • Rate of pay (if this is low, you can take the FTE pro-rata pay as calculated on the UKCIL site)

  • Hours of work (which will help indicate when the PA needs to be available for work)

  • Condition e.g. autism (this is ideal but not always necessary)

  • Always mention "personal care assistant" (it's not always necessary to stipulate male or female unless gender is a requirement)

Always remember you will have a character limit so use the job title space wisely.

Write a precise and engaging narrative job description

The best way to write a job description is to find the balance between being to the point and being detailed.

Always be clear in the opening paragraph so that the potential candidate understands if this role is suited for them. Continue the narrative by covering what the potential personal care assistant will be doing within their role each day. Talk about the person who needs care so that the job seeker will understand who they will be providing care for e.g. if the disabled person has special interests.

Please do not share your personal contact details in the job description as it will appear publicly - candidates will be able to reach you safely and securely through UKCIL.
